When does the second trimester of pregnancy officially start?
Q. At what week does the second trimester of pregnancy officially start? And if a doctor says you're say for example...6 weeks and two days on a tuesday...would that mean that monday would be 6 weeks and one day? Would Sunday then be the first day of the 6th week, or would Monday? I'm really having a brain fart here! Thanks:)
A. Last time I was at the doctor's office they told me I'd officially be in the second trimester at the end of that week, once I hit the 13 week mark.
If you're 6 weeks and 2 days then it means you've already completed 6 weeks of pregnancy and technically are now 2 days into the 7th week. Sunday would have been the 6 week mark and Monday would be 6 weeks 1 day.

By the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, the corpus luteum begins to degenerate. What effect does this?
Q. By the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, the corpus luteum begins to degenerate. What effect does this have on the pregnancy?
a. Stem cells repair the damage to the corpus luteum and the pregnancy continues.
b. Because the corpus luteum secretes progesterone and estrogen, something else must take over secretion of these hormones for the pregnancy to continue.
c. Because this happens late in the first trimester of pregnancy, there is no effect.
d. The fetus could be rejected by the mother.

A. B
That thing that takes over for secretion of the progesterone and estrogen is the placenta.
Reason the corpus luteum doesnt degenerate the first trimester is because of the placenta also secretes human chorionic gonadotropic (HCG) hormone which preserves the corpus luteum.
By the end of the first semester HCG levels go down but by this time the placenta takes over in secreting estrogen and progesterone.

Is it safe to have sex during the first trimester of pregnancy?
Q. I am 9 weeks and 4 days pregnant and since i have conceived my husband and i have not had sex. Is it safe to have sex during the first trimester of pregnancy as long as the pregnancy is progressing according? Thanks in advance for all answers!
A. Yes. Sex at all stages of pregnancy is safe. Unless your doctor has told you that you are high risk or that you need "cervical rest" its fine. If yall are very concerned, be sure to bring it up at the next appointment. Sometimes just hearing "its fine" from a doctor is just what a person needs to feel better about it.
