What's the difference between "Gestational Weeks" and "Pregnancy weeks"?

Q. I'd like to know exactly how many weeks my baby is! :-) I don't know if he/she's 12 weks or 10 weeks. What's the differennce between Gestational Weeks and Pregnancy Weeks??

A. Figure out the first day of your last period. That is the day your PREGNANCY started (i know it dosnt make much sense, but technically you are 2 weeks pregnant before you even conceive.). Then, two weeks after that (since women usually ovulate 14 days after their period starts), is when your baby should have been conceived. That is the GESTATIONAL time/weeks.

So according to your example (12/10 weeks), if your first day of your last period was 12 weeks ago, then you are 12 weeks PREGNANT, however the actual age of the baby itself is only 10 weeks.

When people say "Oh, I am 12 weeks pregnant", they are refering to their PREGNANCY in weeks...not the age of the fetus. A pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks, but the baby is only around for 38 of those 40 weeks.

I have NO idea why it is calculated this way (I think for the docs to have a 'generic' way of calculating, since women ovulate at different times, and we can never be sure EXACTLY when a sperm fertilized an egg)...so they use teh basic guidelines to calculate these things). It took me a while to get used to the idea that I was considered 'pregnant' before me and my husband 'got busy'...kind of weird, but thats the way they do it.

So remember however far along the docs tell you you are, that is the Pregnancy weeks...minus two weeks, and you have teh age of the baby itself.

Good luck, and congrats!

How do you determine how many weeks you are pregnant when you have a longer than 28 day cycle?
Q. I know typically you start counting the pregnancy weeks on the first day of your LMP, but I ovulate on day 19, not 14, so my cycle is 5 days longer. I would think it was more important to go by your ovulation/conception date since that is when the embryo actually begins, which would put me almost a week earlier than if I went by my LMP date. My doctor doesnt want to see me yet but I am anxious to know how far along I really am.

A. You can go online and find a gestation calculator and it will figure it up for you.

Which are the pregnancy symptoms besides absence of menstrual bleeding and when do they appear?
Q. Which are the pregnancy symptoms besides absence of menstrual bleeding and after how many pregnancy weeks do they normally appear?

A. Every woman's body is different. What might happen to some may not happen for others. Just listen to your own body and determine how you feel. Instead of asking here why don't you google in early pregnancy symptoms on the net. That will tell you what you need to know and look for if you feel that you are pregnant. When in doubt TAKE A TEST. Good luck.

What is the correlation between pregnancy weeks and months?
Q. You have 9 months in a pregnancy and 40 weeks. How many weeks are considered to be in each month or trimester.

A. You are actually pregnant for about 10 months.

10 months multiplied by 4 weeks in a month= 40 weeks
