Q. i weigh 186 and i am 5ft 3 inches tall. i know im grossly overweight, my bmi is 32.9 right now, and i am working on decreasing it... A LOT.
im doing ok in that department, but my ultimate goal is to have another baby. of course i want to lose weight so i can have a healthier pregnancy and be a healthier person all around. i used to weigh 115, so really this weight is uncomfortable and embarrassing.
anyhow, i was just wondering if anyone had gotten any recommendations from doctors or if anyone with medical experience could give me a hand on this one.
i will have health insurance in a month and im not going to get pregnant until then at least, but my main problem is that i cannot see a doctor right now to discuss this with them.
in order to be in the "normal" range, i would have to lose 45 pounds right now, im just wondering if i need to lose all of that before trying to concieve.
thanks!
thanks kat. good luck on ttc!!! baby dust!
doodlestuff, thank you so much!
i am on sparkpeople... i love it. i did so great on their programs for a while, fell off track... but im back on! woo! oh, and im taking prenatals now... walmart's brand, i believe, but still! its much better than nothing.
and thanks to the other answerers! this is making me feel better about my situation, not my weight, ill be ruined the day im comfortable with it... but at least i am realizing (with more and more research) that we dont necessarily have to wait!
im determined to have a healthy pregnancy. my last one was a miracle, i didnt find out i was pregnant until i was 5 months and didnt get prenatal care (stupid doctors) until i was 6 months. luckily i had a super healthy baby boy! but i dont want to risk it at all this time.
thanks!! hope answers keep coming!

A. Lose 10% and get regular exercise and you will be a long way to having a healthy pregnancy. Even if all you do is a 10 minute walk, 3x daily, studies have shown that this drastically improves your body functions. You do not have to wait until you are to an ideal weight unless you have breathing problems. Also, get your blood pressure checked. Most clinics, fire depts. will do it as a free service. Regular exercise will bring it down, but it will also tell you if you have a tendency towards a higher blood pressure at this time.
My doctor told me he was fine with me losing weight so long as I kept it to an average of a pound a week. More than that could be a problem. Following a Weight Watchers style diet is nearly always approved by doctors.
Oh, and start taking OTC prenatals now for the extra folic acid. Target brand is a good one. Your doctor may even up it more, but at least this is something you can do without a prescription. Women over 165 lbs. were found not to respond as well to the amounts of folic in regular vitamins and generally need to take more.

how much does your diet while pregnant during pregnancy affect the baby in the long run?
Q. would there be much difference between a generally healthy diet and an extremely healthy diet? mainly if a woman ate an even more elevated level of green vegetables and protein to ensure that the baby got plenty of nutrients...and with the protein like i mentioned would that possibly make the baby more "muscular" at birth or give it a higher potential for muscle growth later on in life?
A. You need to eat healthy during pregnancy however you do not need to over do it and eat for too. You need to remember the little one is small and wont be able to eat everything you do therefor not all the food that you eat will get digested by the baby however you do need to eat more then you would before you were pregnant and that meaning is that your daily intake of calories a day should be 300 more then the regular intake that a normal person usually takes in the run of a day that being said 300 extra calories for being pregnant is not that much a banana would do there for trying to eat extremely healthy is not going to make your baby stronger or anything. Just follow a regular healthy diet and your baby is going to be healthy also.
Any mothers out there who were overweight before they got pregnant?
Q. I'm just curious. I'm overweight by 30lbs. and I've struggled to get 10lbs. off in the past 2 months. Losing weight is very hard for me even though I diet and exercise regularly. I'm trying to lose weight so I can have a healthy pregnancy and not feel like an elephant but the weight just isn't coming off. So I wanna know what it's like to be overweight and pregnant.
I appreciate any info/advice you can provide. Thanks!

A. I am also overweight. I was overweight by 50 lbs but before I got pregnant I started losing weight slowly because I was tired of looking at myself so fat.
Unfortunately my pregnancy wasnt "Planned" so I didnt get to drop all of my weight so at the begining of my pregnancy I was overweight by 35 lbs.
My doctor didnt have much of a problem with it, he just said I probably wouldnt (and wouldnt want to) gain 60 lbs like skinny toothpick Moms do, and just to watch what I eat and excersize.
Most of my weight was proportionate so it wasnt all in one spot..thank God..I am also a little bit tall (5ft9in)
So far I have been able to regulate my weight gain and I have gained 9 lbs so far.. I just make sure I dont over-do the pregnancy cravings, I try to walk my dogs on nice days, and I drink a lot of water. Last time I went to the doc they said the baby is on target and that I am doing a great job of getting him what he needs and that by now a lot of the weight is due to blood increase. (Blood increases about 50-75% during pregnancy) Also a little of it is breast tissue, placenta, and about 9 oz is the baby.
I have only noticed a gain in my tummy, I havent accumulated any extra fat anywhere else..
If you're pregnant don't diet and go run 4 miles, just watch what you eat and do low impact workouts.
Being 30 lbs "overweight" isnt that bad..Not everyone wants to look like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

What can I do as a teenager to make my body the best possible to have children in the future?
Q. I'm a 17-year-old girl. What can I do now to have the highest chance of a healthy pregnancy in the future, like when I'm in my 30s?
A. Eat a healthy, balanced diet, get plenty of rest and exercise, and avoid toxins such as alcohol, drugs and cigarettes. You should also start taking a folic acid supplement now. Many women don't take them until they are thinking about conceiving, but all women of childbearing age (and I'll assume you have gotten your period by now) should take one. Good luck, and I wish you a healthy pregnancy - many years from now, of course.
