Q. My boyfriend and I are planning to wed andhave a child as soon as possible. I am 40 this year, healthy and fit by all means but before trying to conceive I'd like to know if there are some supplements, foods or general guidelines to help having a healthy pregnancy and conceiving. I am taking folic acid tablets... what else could I do? So many thanks
A. Go to the OBGYN and get a physical. Tell the doctor your plan to start conceiving. Start taking a prenatal vitamin and 1000 mg of folic acid. It is best to start doing this at least 3 months prior to trying to conceive. It reduces the risk of birth defects and promotes a healthy baby and pregnancy.

Is there any proof that a healthy diet improves pregnancy outcomes?
Q. Obviously, a 'healthy diet' is going to give better odds than a diet _seriously_ deficient in necessary-for-anyone nutrients, but is there any proof that a person eating a lot of clearly healthy stuff has better odds of a healthy pregnancy and baby than somebody eating junk food, while taking a pre-natal vitamin?
A. There is tons of proof that a healty diet helps to have a healthy child. A little junk food is ok but prenatal vitamins don't balance out total junk food. Pregnancy is the foundation of what the childs health will be for years to come especially brain development. If you eat mostly unhealthy the babys system will take what it can and it will affect your health and enjoyment of having a baby.

How many calories is a pregnant woman's healthy diet supposed to be?
Q. If a person is supposed to have a healthy diet of 2,000 calories a day, then what is a pregnant woman's healthy calorie intake supposed to be? Is it any different?
A. When my mom was pregnant with my baby brother (this was 13 years ago mind you) she had gestational diabetes and was on a 2000 calorie diet during the pregnancy..
