What is the best medication or shampoo for mange? Any useful remedies?

Q. My dog has mange. I really want her to get better. The vet said stress may have caused it after pregnancy. Any tips? Thank you so much!
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT DO NOT LEAVE AN ANSWER. Obviously, I have been to the vet. Only an idiot would not seek medical attention for their dog in need. I just want some extra advice or suggestions. They put my dog on antibiotics. THANK YOU TO THOSE WITH REAL ANSWERS!

A. If it's stress induced (aka changes in immune function due to pregnancy)...your vet may be speaking of demodex (normal skin mite that can go haywire due to decreased immune function).

Your vet should have done a skin scrape to determine the exact kind of mite present and then given you a treatment plan according to type of mite present.

We do not have access to a skin scraping so we can't accurately tell you which treatment plan will work for your pet. If it is demodex, Ivermectrin (careful in herding breeds) is used along with antibiotics to prevent secondary skin infection +/- steroids (contraindicated in immune condition such as this, but sometimes needed to break the itch/scratch cycle).

Please return to your vet who can advise you.

How to prepare for pregnancy, tips please?
Q. My boyfriend and I are going to be start working for a baby in the end of July.
Is there anything I can do to ensure a healthy baby?
I am trying to lose some weight and eat and drink healthier.
Is there any tips or anything I should do?

Thanks all for the support.

God Bless!

A. The first thing you should do is start taking prenatal vitamins right now. That's what my doctor recommended when I told her I was TTC. The baby needs folic acid and other vitamin supplements from the moment of conception, and you usually don't know right away--in fact, you usually don't know that you concieved for a few weeks! So it's a good idea to be taking prenatals (or at least a multivitamin) when you're starting TTC, so that it's in your system already if it works.

Second, if you're overweight, it's a good idea (as you said!) to lose some weight and try to be at a healthy weight. It's not the worst thing in the world to be overweight and pregnant, but it's healthier for you and your baby overall if you can maintain a healthy baseline weight when pregnant.

If you smoke, take drugs, or drink, now is a good time to wean yourself off of them. Similarly, if you're on any regular medications, you should check with your doctor to see if any of them are problematic for pregnancy. If you are, you need to figure out if there are pregnancy-safe replacements, or if you need to keep taking them up until you actually are pregnant anyway, because you really need them.

Once you TTC, you should try to avoid taking any OTC medications like advil--the only drugs that are pregnancy approved are Tylenol, Benadryl and Zyrtec.

Getting into a healthy eating pattern now is a great idea--just remember that once you actually are pregnant, at least at the begininng you might not be able to keep it up (morning sickness is a killer!) so don't be too discouraged if that happens.

The other thing to do now is get into an exercise routine! It's REALLY good to exercise when pregnant, and it's really hard to start a routine when you're already pregnant. It's much easier if you've already established a routine. So talk to your doctor, and figure out what exercises are safe for pregnant women, and start doing them.

Find an OBGYN that you're comfortable with. You have a little time now to interview doctors and get a sense of them. Do you have any ideas about what kind of birth you want to have? Natural? Epidural? Do you want a midwife? You obviously don't need to hire a midwife before you're even pregnant, but it can't hurt to start considering these options, so that when you ARE ready, you know what you're looking for.

Finally, don't give up hope if it takes longer than you expect. According to my doctor, a healthy couple with no fertility problems at all who are charting their fertility and have sex at the exact right time for conception only have a 20% chance of concieving--which means that just because you don't get pregnant right away doesn't mean there's something wrong with you, or that you should lose hope!

Good luck!

How do I get my butt back after giving birth?
Q. I just had a baby and im back down to my pre-pregnancy size..well actually smaller and while im very fortunate to be this size and its only been 2 weeks since my little bundle was born (meaning i havent worked at all to lose the weight) im upset because i lost my butt during this pregnancy..any tips on how to get it back? my hubby said eat bread like corn bread and lots of sandwiches BUT it doesnt work..those things have NEVER gone to my butt..i just always had a naturally big one..but now its gone & i miss it lol i know this sounds so weird but i really would like to know what i can do to get it back. Help?

A. You could have lost some muscle mass from restricted exercise during and after pregnancy. You don't need fat and carbs, you just need well formed glutes! Try squats!
