What's the difference between "Gestational Weeks" and "Pregnancy weeks"?

Q. I'd like to know exactly how many weeks my baby is! :-) I don't know if he/she's 12 weks or 10 weeks. What's the differennce between Gestational Weeks and Pregnancy Weeks??

A. Figure out the first day of your last period. That is the day your PREGNANCY started (i know it dosnt make much sense, but technically you are 2 weeks pregnant before you even conceive.). Then, two weeks after that (since women usually ovulate 14 days after their period starts), is when your baby should have been conceived. That is the GESTATIONAL time/weeks.

So according to your example (12/10 weeks), if your first day of your last period was 12 weeks ago, then you are 12 weeks PREGNANT, however the actual age of the baby itself is only 10 weeks.

When people say "Oh, I am 12 weeks pregnant", they are refering to their PREGNANCY in weeks...not the age of the fetus. A pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks, but the baby is only around for 38 of those 40 weeks.

I have NO idea why it is calculated this way (I think for the docs to have a 'generic' way of calculating, since women ovulate at different times, and we can never be sure EXACTLY when a sperm fertilized an egg)...so they use teh basic guidelines to calculate these things). It took me a while to get used to the idea that I was considered 'pregnant' before me and my husband 'got busy'...kind of weird, but thats the way they do it.

So remember however far along the docs tell you you are, that is the Pregnancy weeks...minus two weeks, and you have teh age of the baby itself.

Good luck, and congrats!

What is the best pregnancy book to read?
Q. I read Your pregnancy week by week with my first child and fixing to read the newer version of it with this pregnancy. Just wondering if there are any other great Pregnancy books out there to read. Thanks.

A. what to expect when your expecting. i read it like everyday, ive pretty much got it memorized lol

How do you say what week of the pregnancy you are in?
Q. Lets say you are 6 weeks and 2 days. You are technically you are in your 7th week, but you are 6 weeks pregnant. I just want to know when I am looking at websites that tell you what happening in a pregnancy week to week. Which week would you be looking at?

A. If mine were to say 6 wk 2 day I would say 6 weeks.

What is the difference between how pregnant you are and how old your fetus is?
Q. Today I am five weeks and five days pregnant. I have been researching pregnancy week by week. Is this not accurate? is my fetus five weeks old or is that how long I've been pregnant? I am confused can someone please explain it to me?

A. The doctors count from the first day of your last period. SO basically you just add two weeks onto your 5 weeks and you have how far along you are.

So if it's 5 weeks from your last menstral period, you're only 5 weeks pregnant, technically 3 developement wise.

Stupid, I know.

For example: Baby wise I'm only 5 weeks, but dr wise I'm 7wks.
