What's the best exercises to get rid of post pregnancy flab-because of c-section?

Q. I asked this on the health and fitness forum and didn't get much help so I figured I would try it here to see if some of you have had this problem and what you did. I had my c-section done 17 months ago and I've been walking and doing crunches but they don't seem to be doing much. Thanks for your help.

A. PILATES!!!!!! It builds strong, LEAN muscle...so you don't bulk up like a man. There's a floor maching that folds away easily. It gives you lots of energy too and it's fun!

Is it ok to run for a fitness test while your pregnant?
Q. I am only two weeks pregnant. I'm in the military and have to do a fitness test this weekand which consists of situps, pushups, and a 2 mile run. Is it safe to partake in the fitness test while being pregnant?

A. You go by your last period to find out how far along you are in pregnancy so I am positive you are further than 2 weeks-you would at least have to be 4 or so anyway I would talk to your doctor on whether or not it would be best to do the physical test or not.

Women have more muscle endurance than men during long fitness and aerobic exsercise ?
Q. I read many facts about it -Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle group to contract over long periods of time. Men have more muscle mass than women, women consistently have more levels of muscular endurance ? My fitness instructor say that women get stronger, faster than men in long aerobic or fitness exercise. Is that true ?

A. " Paula Radcliffe " springs to mind, theory states that woman do in fact have a higher ratio slow twitch to high twitch fibres per lb of muscle then what men do. It's speculated to be because of the added weight from pregnancy & carrying children and it's impact on evolution. Of course this is just theory that is based on non athletes, most endurance sports records are held by males.

How Can I Get my Pre-pregnancy Body Shape Back?
Q. I seem to be out of shape with my pregnancy. I do not know if I will be able to retain my shape that I had before the pregnancy.

A. The second biggest question you will ask yourself as a new mom is, "Will I be able to get back into shape after I give birth?" (The first, of course, is, "Will I be a good mother?") The truth is, yes, you can get back into pre-pregnancy shape and, if you desire, you can get yourself into even better shape than you were in before your pregnancy.

One of the biggest myths you must get past is the classic, "The doctor said I have to wait six weeks before I do any kind of exercise." Under certain circumstances this is a valid rule. For instance, your pregnancy may have occurred later in life or you experienced complications during your pregnancy and/or the actual birth of your baby.

If you fall into this category you should communicate with you doctor regarding your desire to exercise and abide by her recommendations.

But, if you had an uncomplicated, normal pregnancy there should be no reason why you can't start working out twenty four hours after you give birth. So as not to mislead you, let's define working out as it applies to you at this stage of the game.

You are clearly not ready to jump into a full scale fitness program one day after giving birth. But you can and should begin doing gentle isometrics (contract a muscle, hold it for a few seconds & then release it) and Kegels. Of course, you should consult with your doctor before starting just so she is aware of what you are doing. She may also have some valuable input.

Before you leave the hospital ask the doctor about the condition of your rectus abdominus. These are the two muscles that run parallel to each other from the pubic area up to the diaphragm. During some pregnancies the connective tissue between these two muscles tears and separates. If this is your case ask your doctor how you can help them reconnect and heal faster. This will be necessary in order for you to add the next few exercises to your routine.
