How long do unemployment benefits last in North Carolina?
Q. I was laid off in August of 2009 and have been receiving unemployment benefits since September of 2009. I am on my first extension and having a very hard time finding employment. I know it is illegal for prospective employers to discriminate, but my obvious pregnancy is most definitely affecting my ability to secure a job. How much longer can I claim benefits?

A. NC, as all states, gives you 26 weeks of UI benefits. (Actually, you get a year, but if you claim the maximum amount weekly, it's only good for 26 weeks. It will last up to a year if you get a part-time job and only claim half your weekly benefits.) Anything after that is Federal.

Following is the schedule of payments for most people (remember, if you had part-time work during your regular OR Federal UI claims, the time frames may be extended):

Regular state funded UI: 26 weeks
Tier I: 20 weeks
Tier II: 14 weeks
Tier III: 13 weeks
Tier IV: 6 weeks

However, currently, they only expect these benefits to be available through December 31, 2010. You'll need to get a calendar to find out how long you'll be able to claim.

There is one problem which may also affect your benefits -- namely your pregnancy. When you report the fact that you are looking for work, you may have to tell them that you were unable to accept a job for maybe a week before the birth and a week after.

How much exercise should i be doing in my pregnancy?
Q. I am 29 weeks pregnant now, and before the pregnancy I used to be in my university lacrosse team, so i was doing a lot of exercise, but since i became pregnant i just lost the will to exercise loads, and got told i should only be doing 30mins twice a week, but that doesnt sound right to me? I have been walking the dog a lot, and going to start doing weekly swimming now too, but is it too late? How much should i be doing now im 29weeks? Thank you

A. Maintaining a regular exercise routine throughout your pregnancy can help you stay healthy and feel your best. Regular exercise during pregnancy can improve your posture and decrease some common discomforts such as backaches and fatigue. There is evidence that physical activity may prevent gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy), relieve stress, and build more stamina needed for labor and delivery.

If you were physically active before your pregnancy, you should be able to continue your activity in moderation. Don't try to exercise at your former level; instead, do what's most comfortable for you now. Low impact aerobics are encouraged versus high impact. Do not let your heart rate exceed 140 beats per minute.

How to Get Pregnant

The pregnant competitive athlete should be closely followed by an obstetrician.

If you have never exercised regularly before, you can safely begin an exercise program during pregnancy after consulting with your health care provider, but do not try a new, strenuous activity. Walking is considered safe to initiate when pregnant.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise per day on most if not all days of the week, unless you have a medical or pregnancy complication

What are some major milestones when you are pregnant?
Q. I know some of the basics, but when do you start 'craving' foods and have to wear maternity pants? I am only 7 weeks along, 5'2", and short-waisted. My doctor said it is possible for me to start 'bloating out' anytime and have to wear larger pants. I just want to make sure I am not 'mentally creating' these feelings!

Is there a website where you can find out these 'mommy milestones?' I have had already checked out several.

A. Everyone's milestones are different. You can find a great weekly calendar on ivillage.com that gives general "what you should be experiencing" information that could be very helpful. I needed maternity pants at about 12 weeks because I started poking out so low I couldn't get my regular jeans to fit. I didn't need maternity shirts, however, until about week 16 or 17. The cravings come and go, at least for me. I had really strong cravings/dislikes when I was early in my pregnancy and now (I'm almost 27 weeks) I don't crave much of anything. I think my cravings had a lot to do with morning sickness, though.

Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!
