How can I make sure I have a healthy pregnancy, I have Cystic Fibrosis?

Q. I'm pregnant with identical twins, I'm early on in the pregnancy, but I have Cystic Fibrosis so I'm worried that there may be complications and I won't have healthy babies (they don't have the disease though, they tested negative). But what are some good tips to have a healthy pregnancy and make sure the babies are born ok?

A. What every pregnant woman should do and even more so:
Eat well, get exercise, get the right amount of rest, take naps. Don't exhaust yourself

Get an OB with expertise in handling unusual pregnancies. Go to legitimate websites for advice. You can do your own research on the National Library of Medicine website.

Has anyone gotten had a healthy pregnancy shortly after miscarriage?
Q. I had my second miscarriage in October. It was a long three months, but I had a second D&C and finally got my period. I know that you're supposed to wait two months. I'm wondering if anyone went through something similar and went on to have a healthy pregnancy, and how long you waited to get pregnant. Please answer if you've had similar experiences.

A. I had a miscarriage at the end of May, 2009. I got pregnant (oops!) again June 12th. It took me a while to figure out that I was pregnant. I just thought that I was still waiting for my period after the miscarriage. I am now 37 weeks pregnant and awaiting this little man's arrival. Everything has been healthy so far. I have been told by my doctor that the main reason that they want you to wait for a cycle (or two) is for dating purposes in the next pregnancy. There is no medical evidence that waiting or not waiting has any effect on the next pregnancy.

what is the best way to prepare for a healthy pregnancy?
Q. My boyfriend and I are planning to wed andhave a child as soon as possible. I am 40 this year, healthy and fit by all means but before trying to conceive I'd like to know if there are some supplements, foods or general guidelines to help having a healthy pregnancy and conceiving. I am taking folic acid tablets... what else could I do? So many thanks

A. Go to the OBGYN and get a physical. Tell the doctor your plan to start conceiving. Start taking a prenatal vitamin and 1000 mg of folic acid. It is best to start doing this at least 3 months prior to trying to conceive. It reduces the risk of birth defects and promotes a healthy baby and pregnancy.

Read the book: Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. The book fully explains your cycle, charting and how to get pregnant. It is a must read.

Read the book, The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis. The book discusses Chinese medicine, diet, herbs and acupuncture to increase fertility and promote a healthy pregnancy.

Has anyone had a healthy pregnancy after having radiation treatment for cancer?
Q. I am just wondering if anyone has had radiation treatment for cancer and still been able to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. I had my last radiation treatment about 8 years ago for the treatment of thyroid cancer and I am just wondering if it is possible for me to ever be able to have a healthy child.

A. This is something to discuss with your oncologist, but radiation treatment is usually very localized. There is really no chance external radiation treatment affected the eggs you have stored in your ovaries. However, there are glands in the head that make and control the hormones needed to get your ovaries to release an egg. You need to speak with the doc to see if the radiation could have affected that, and if any of those affects would be long term. Also, if you received radioactive iodine initially to treat the cancer, that could have affected your eggs, but that is dose dependent and in most cases has little to no affect on fertility.
