From what point should I start calculating my pregnancy weight gain?

Q. I am 28 weeks pregnant and I am supposed to have gained 17-24 pounds by this point but I have only gained 9 pounds. However, I was told by a few people (no one "professional") that I am to calculate my weight gain with the weight I was when I first got pregnant. But, the thing is that in the first 10 weeks I lost 12 pounds from morning sickness... should I calculate that weight I gained back too or should I be worreid about only gaining 9 "real additional pounds"?

A. Calculate is from your orignial pre-pregnancy weight. Don't worry about it... you have a lot of time to catch up. I actually started to lose weight in the last month of pregnancy... and I still had a 10 pound baby.

How do I calculate my pregnancy weight gain if I lost weight in the beginning?
Q. I am overweight and I lost 15 pounds in the first trimester, and I have just now gotten back to where I started so do I count that as a gain of 15 pounds, or do I say I netted 0 weight gain?

A. generally we're adding weight we've gained onto our pre-pregnancy weight so in your case
you haven't gained a thing, which is probably just fine considering you were overweight to begin with

Have I gained too much weight in my pregnancy so far?
Q. I know that a healthy pregnancy weight gain for an average sized woman is 25 to 35 pounds. I'm 26 weeks, and I've already gained 23 pounds! I'm walking a lot and trying to eat healthy, but my apetite is RAVENOUS. Do I have any chance of staying under 35 pounds? My doctor says I'm fine and I have nothing to worry about, but people keep telling me how big my baby must be if my belly is this big already. I'm mostly all belly, but my butt has gotten a little bigger.

A. If your doctor is not concerned then I would not worry about it. I know how people can be I am 20 weeks and I am getting the "oh my god you are huge" all the time. Truth is I have only gained 7 lbs. my mother-in-law is the main one that keeps telling me that. Its like they think we don't own a mirror and can not see for ourselves that we have gained weight. I would not stress out over the weight, or what people are saying. Best of luck.

Can weight gain cause your areola to stretch out and increase in size?
Q. I don't mean from pregnancy either, but from general weight gain. I think it can probably happen, but I've never heard anyone talk about this before.

A. i think it CAN happen from weight gain in general. after all, if your breasts increase in size from the weight gain, it seems like your areolas would also have to get bigger too, especially if the weight gain was rapid and it caused your skin to stretch out. maybe you could even get stretch marks on your nipples! now thats a scary thought......
